How the calculation works

Fuel spending depends on both how far you travel and how consumption is quoted. This tool converts the selected distance and consumption units before pricing the fuel, then adds entered journey extras and optionally divides the total among travellers.

Convert miles to km using 1.609344. UK MPG converts to L/100 km as 282.480936331822 ÷ MPG; US MPG uses 235.214583333333 ÷ MPG. Litres = km × L/100 km ÷ 100. Fuel cost = litres × €/L × repetitions.
  1. Put distance and efficiency on a common basis

Miles are converted to kilometres, and the selected MPG convention is converted to litres per 100 kilometres when needed.

  2. Calculate and price fuel volume

Multiply distance by consumption and divide by 100 to obtain litres. Fuel price is per litre, regardless of the distance or MPG units chosen.

  3. Add repeated extras and sharing

Apply the trip count to fuel and per-trip tolls or parking. The shared-cost result then divides the combined total by the number of people.

Worked example: One trip

Sample inputs demonstrate the method. They are not a forecast or product offer.

The first example travels 200 kilometres at 5 litres per 100 kilometres. That requires ten litres; at 2 per litre and one trip, total fuel cost is 20.

Understanding your result

Fuel cost is distinct from total journey cost when extras are entered. Neither figure includes depreciation, insurance, hotels or costs that were not supplied.

A monthly or annual result is a repeated-journey scenario, not a forecast of future fuel prices or a route-dependent traffic estimate.

Questions you might have

What does this fuel cost calculator include?

Calculate trip, monthly or annual fuel spending in kilometres or miles, using L/100 km or UK/US MPG and your own fuel price.

Which assumptions should I check?

Enter the whole distance, including any return leg. UK and US gallons are different; choose the unit that matches your consumption figure. No route map, live forecourt prices, hotel costs or vehicle database is supplied.

Choosing the right inputs

Distance per trip or period
Enter the complete distance represented by one trip or period, including any return leg. The tool does not infer a route or automatically double a one-way distance.
Consumption unit
Choose litres per 100 kilometres, UK MPG or US MPG. UK and US gallons differ, so matching the source of your figure matters.
Number of trips or periods
Use one for an already-totalled distance, or the number of repeated journeys. Tolls and parking are also repeated for each entered trip.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not multiply both total annual distance and the number of annual journeys.
  • Do not enter price per gallon in the price-per-litre field.

Assumptions to check
