How the calculation works

Time off in lieu turns eligible overtime into a credit of leave hours under a multiplier you supply. The calculator then expresses that credit as equivalent leave days, keeping the agreed premium separate from the length of a leave day.

TOIL hours = eligible overtime hours × agreed multiplier. Equivalent days = TOIL hours ÷ leave-day hours.
  1. Establish the eligible hours

Start from the overtime quantity you have confirmed. This calculator does not decide which work qualifies or whether the agreement permits TOIL instead of pay.

  2. Apply the TOIL multiplier

Multiply eligible overtime by the agreed multiplier to obtain the credited leave hours. The multiplier changes the credit, not the number of hours originally worked.

  3. Convert the credit to days

Divide credited hours by hours per leave day. Fractional days remain visible so the time credit can be reconciled with the hourly result.

Worked example: Time and a half

Sample inputs demonstrate the method. They are not a forecast or product offer.

The first example credits eight overtime hours at a multiplier of 1.5. That produces twelve TOIL hours. With eight hours in one leave day, the same credit is equivalent to one and a half days.

Understanding your result

The hourly credit is the primary result. Changing the leave-day convention changes the equivalent days while leaving those credited hours unchanged.

This calculation creates a scenario for an agreed arrangement; it does not apply carryover limits, expiry dates, approval requirements or a statutory premium.

Questions you might have

What does this time off in lieu calculator include?

Convert eligible overtime into time off in lieu using the multiplier agreed in your workplace.

Which assumptions should I check?

Eligibility, expiry and multiplier depend on your agreement. This tool does not assume a statutory right to a particular TOIL multiplier.

Choosing the right inputs

Eligible overtime hours
Enter only the hours eligible for TOIL under your arrangement. Ordinary working hours or hours already compensated another way should not be added automatically.
Agreed TOIL multiplier
Use the agreed total multiplier: 1 credits one leave hour per eligible overtime hour, while 1.5 credits one and a half.
Hours per leave day
Enter the positive number of credited hours represented by one leave day. It may differ from another employee’s working-day convention.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not enter 150 as a multiplier when the intended rate is time and a half; use 1.5.
  • Avoid counting the same overtime twice when maintaining a separate flexitime ledger or overtime-pay record.

Assumptions to check
