Financial Independence Age Scenario Calculator

Test candidate retirement ages against your spending horizon while keeping accessible savings and locked pension funds separate. The result is a financial scenario, not a legal retirement age or a pension entitlement.

How the calculation works

The financial-independence search checks whether stopping work at each candidate age would leave enough accessible money to meet the remaining spending horizon. Locked pension assets are kept separate until the access age you supply, even if total wealth appears sufficient.

For every candidate retirement age, simulate accessible and locked assets separately, unlock the pension pot only at the supplied access age, and test that all annual spending gaps are funded to the end age.
  1. Convert returns to purchasing power

The real rate is one plus net nominal return divided by one plus inflation, minus one. Spending, income and savings are consequently compared in today’s money.

  2. Test a candidate retirement age

At the start of each retirement year, accessible funds meet the spending gap after relevant income. The pension pot becomes accessible only at the supplied age.

  3. Move to the next candidate if needed

If the accessible balance would become negative, the candidate fails. One more working year grows the assets and adds the stated accessible saving before testing again.

Sample inputs demonstrate the method. They are not a forecast or product offer.

In the first example, a 60-year-old has €100,000 accessible savings, zero return and €10,000 annual spending through age 70. Ten withdrawals are fully funded without further saving, so the earliest tested age, 60, already succeeds.

Understanding your result

The earliest successful age funds every modelled annual gap through the end age, rather than merely reaching a fixed multiple of spending. An unfunded result stays explicitly unresolved within the chosen horizon.

Constant returns cannot describe adverse market sequences. Re-run with lower returns, higher spending or a later pension start to see which assumption drives the result.

Questions you might have

What does the result include?

Find the earliest modelled age when accessible assets and later pension resources can fund a chosen spending horizon.

Which limits should I check?

Deterministic real returns; no sequence-of-returns, longevity or entitlement guarantee. Pension income and pension-pot access may use separate supplied ages.

Choosing the right inputs

Annual saving into accessible assets
Enter annual saving into accessible assets in today’s money. It is added at each year-end while working and stops at the candidate retirement age.
Pension income start age
Use separate ages if pension income starts at a different time from pension-pot access. Both dates are assumptions to confirm independently.
Planning end age
This is the last planning boundary, not a life-expectancy forecast. The search tests whole-year retirement ages before it.
Projection date
The projection date anchors the approximate calendar year shown. It does not turn whole-year age testing into a birthday-level retirement date.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not count the same pension resource as both a separate income stream and an unrestricted pot unless that reflects the actual arrangement.
  • The result does not establish a legal pension access age or employment retirement right.

Assumptions to check

  • Deterministic real returns; no sequence-of-returns, longevity or entitlement guarantee. Pension income and pension-pot access may use separate supplied ages.
  • All calculations run on your device. Figures are scenarios based on your inputs, not investment recommendations.
