How the calculation works

A child-related budget can change considerably between age stages. This tool allows separate monthly assumptions for non-overlapping stages, then adds one-off expenses and subtracts confirmed support across the same planning horizon.

Sum monthly cost × months for each non-overlapping age stage, add one-off expenses, then subtract confirmed support.
  1. Translate each age stage into months

The difference between its ending and starting age is converted into months. Only the stages entered are costed; gaps do not receive an assumed monthly budget.

  2. Accumulate stage spending

Multiply each stage's monthly cost by its months and sum the results. This lets childcare, food or activity assumptions change between stages without implying a national average.

  3. Reconcile one-off costs and support

Add the one-off total and deduct confirmed support. The resulting net plan shows what remains to be funded under those supplied assumptions.

Worked example: One stage

Sample inputs demonstrate the method. They are not a forecast or product offer.

The first example budgets 500 per month from age zero to one, giving 6,000. One-off expenses of 1,000 and confirmed support of 1,000 offset each other, leaving planned net cost of 6,000.

Understanding your result

Amounts are expressed in today's money without an inflation forecast. The result is therefore different from predicting the actual nominal bills that will be paid years later.

Support is an input, not an eligibility decision. If it changes between stages, establish the horizon total separately before entering it, rather than assuming the calculator applies benefit rules.

Questions you might have

What does this cost of raising a child calculator include?

Build a child-related budget by age stage using your own expected monthly costs, one-off expenses and confirmed support.

Which assumptions should I check?

This is your household plan, not an Irish national average. Amounts are in today’s money without an automatic inflation assumption. Gaps between stages are not costed.

Choosing the right inputs

Age-stage budget
Enter starting age, ending age and monthly cost for each stage. Stages must not overlap, because overlapping months would be counted twice.
One-off expenses
Add expenses that occur once over the horizon, such as an initial equipment budget. Do not also spread the same purchases through monthly stage costs.
Total confirmed support over the horizon
Enter the total confirmed support covering the horizon, not one month's or one year's amount unless that is the whole period.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not interpret an unentered age gap as a zero-cost period in real life.
  • Keep shared household expenses consistent so the same rent or utility cost is not allocated in full to every child.
